What is the Buddy programme?

The Buddy (Mentor) programme was created for those who wish to help new Erasmus students acclimatise to Bulgaria from the very beginning of their stay. Following the motto of ESN — "Students helping students" — a buddy is a patient person who listens and genuinely likes helping others.

Apply to become a buddy

Fill in the application form found on the webpage or Facebook page of your local ESN section. You will provide basic information such as your name and email address. In some sections, you can even choose which country you would like your Erasmus student to come from.

Get matched and make contact

After submitting your form, you will receive information about your Erasmus student. The first and most important step is to contact them — find out when and how they are arriving in Bulgaria, and plan to collect them from the airport and help them get to their accommodation.

Be patient — Erasmus students can have many questions and may ask the same things more than once. It is just as new and stressful for them as it is for you!

Help them settle in

Help your student with registration at their dormitory or apartment. Remember that they may not speak Bulgarian at all — your patience and support here makes all the difference in their first days.

Show them your city

Now the real adventure begins. Where is the best spot for a party? The best panoramic view? The best concerts? Day by day, something special is created — something nobody will ever be able to take away from you.

You started the adventure as Buddy and Erasmus student. You finish it as best friends for years — even when separated by thousands of kilometres.
